I have been educated in the way of the agenda. Apparently, things go better when you plan ahead (who knew?!). I had big plans for The Girl and her Spring Break. But thanks to stupid gas prices and money in general, we opted for a "Staycation." This is just a fancy way of saying "we are finding cheap stuff to do around here."
However, I wasn't leaving this to endless questions of "what are we doing today, this week, this hour" so I posted a list of what we were going to do this week and so far, so good.
Day one was a visit to the Zoo. Thankfully free thanks to our Zoo Membership. Oh, except for the snacks I got talked into since they were STARVING after walking SO FAR (emphasis theirs, not mine).
I'll keep you posted on the rest of our week! Of course today The Boy has been up since 7 am so let's all pray for the addition of NAP to the agenda today...

The Not Bummer Summer
11 weeks just doesn't seem like a very long time. Especially when you are trying to have a Not Bummer Summer.
Inspired by the movie I took Baby Girl to at the beginning of June, we decided to make a list of all the things we wanted to do this summer to make it fun...i.e. not bummer.
School starts tomorrow, and we accomplished everything on the list except for two items (a baseball game and camping out in the backyard).
Here they are (in no particular order):
Going to the Judy Moody Movie
Fourth of July Party
Going to Lakeside
Swim Lessons
The Columbus Zoo
Cousin Sleepover
We decided to add Baby Girl to the fun, and take her to Sea World. I have very fond memories of Sea World as a child. When it was still located in Aurora, Ohio, we were able to go at least once a summer, sometimes more than that.
For a day or so we were convinced my sister had figured out what we were doing. We tried throwing her off the case by making phone calls and talking about how bad the weather was (while we were sitting by the pool) and putting Baby Girl on the phone who turned out to be an excellent story-teller (makes me worry about the future though, ha).
The look on her face when she walked in the room Saturday night and saw us standing there was well worth the whole trip! We had a great time.
Our friends and family went above and beyond to make this a great trip
Some of us were even able to go swimming...
We were so happy to see my sister and brother in law...we had so much fun and it was so hard to leave.

Ode to Lakeside (or How I Learned To Love a Chautauqua)
Ten summers ago, I was pregnant with Baby Girl, and we were invited to spend some time with Dr. Dad's whole family (at that time, 11 people) at a little Chautauqua resort on Lake Erie called Lakeside.
We settled in this little cottage and I immediately thought Chautauqua meant "boring."
I mean, they have their own "world renown" shuffleboard area, for crying out loud.
Sure, it was pretty...
and there were things to do nearby...
but a week of shuffleboard, concerts and rock painting wasn't our thing.
Or so I thought.
Fast forward 10 years, two kids, three cottages and a house full of 16 people and I have slowly developed a love affair with the lazy week we spend at Lakeside.
We do the same things every year...and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Secret Trips and Killer Whales
Although the sickness of '11 kept me from the original Florida trip I had planned, my Mom came up with the great idea of taking another trip; this time to surprise my sister.
Of course, leave it to my family to meet up with my California residing sister by waiting until she was in Florida and then flying in from Ohio.
We decided to add Baby Girl to the fun, and take her to Sea World. I have very fond memories of Sea World as a child. When it was still located in Aurora, Ohio, we were able to go at least once a summer, sometimes more than that.
To keep things in order, here was the plan:
1. We would be staying with my Mom's childhood friend who lives in Orlando and was willing to put up with our antics for the 4 days we would be there.
2. My sister's in laws were going to be in Florida and had a fantastic resort room that they were happy to entertain in, and were right across from Sea World.
3. My sister and her husband were coming in to Orlando from California to see the 8 family members that had come down to Florida and go to Disney.
4. I could not blog/facebook/email or talk to her about the trip, (which was killing me) because if she saw any of my posts the gig would be up.
5. We would be spending 2 days at Sea World and the rest of the time trying not to impose on various people when we needed to drive around Orlando and eat (seriously, these were some incredibly generous people!).
The trip to Sea World was so fantastic. We really did need two days to get through the whole park. The shows were great, especially the dolphin show, which inspired us to do a behind the scenes tour with the dolphins. But that's another post...
The weather was perfect, and several times I had to remind myself it was still January and not the summer! Of course, I had no trouble remembering the month with the ice storm that hit Ohio immediately after we got home.
Our friends and family went above and beyond to make this a great trip
This is my Mom and her friend...it was so fun to hear them talk about their childhood together. I could really see why they were friends. A special thanks to her husband for putting up with the endless chatter of Baby Girl, who never misses an opportunity to entertain a captive audience.
Some of us were even able to go swimming...
I can't even begin to tell you the level of bribery and coaxing that went into getting Baby Girl on this water slide.
We were so happy to see my sister and brother in law...we had so much fun and it was so hard to leave.
I'm so lucky to have my family. Thanks Mom! Thanks Family! Happy Birthday Sis! Love You!

Vacation State of Mind
I walked Baby Girl to the bus stop today and it was sooo chilly.
I have my first cold of the season.
I started pulling out sweatshirts and jeans for the kids to wear.
This was a crazy crazy summer. Just now do I feel like I have a grip on everything and am ready to relax...
But it's back to school and fall activities and - thanks to every single store around here - the reminders of the impending holidays are everywhere.
Why do I still have vacation on my mind?
Maybe remembering our annual week at Lake Erie would help...

Thinking about time with family...
Reliving old traditions...
And how we created new ones...
Dreaming about the cottage we stayed in...
Pondering how fast all the cousins are growing...
Wishing once again for sunny days and swimming pools...

California Gurls
I just got back today from my trip to California to see my sister. Between taking the red eye and the time change and the wine...I am feeling more than a little foggy.
Therefore, I don't have much to say...just wanted to share some pictures of our fun girls weekend.
I would have more, but I had to make room for more clothes by leaving my camera charger at home...
